WHY is there a fee involved in recycling electronics?
Recycling electronics is a very labor-intensive job that involves a lot of time and expertise. Include the cost of shipping, and it’s an expensive thing to do. Plus, with items such as monitors and TV’s, there is actually a NEGATIVE recovery value! Please be cautious with companies or individuals who accept electronics for free recycling or those who actually pay you to recycle your electronics. Most of the time, these items are being shipped overseas to countries who have no environmental standards and are being dismantled by people in unsafe conditions.
The standard fee for electronics recycling is 30 cents per pound. If you are having materials picked up outside of the Billings area a 3-5 cent fuel surcharge will apply depending on distance, amount of material to pick up, and current fuel prices.
We also accept the following items free of charge: Batteries, both household and rechargeable. Cellular phones. Cords and cables. Loose circuit boards and computer drives. Inkjet and toner cartridges.
We DO NOT accept: Traditional recycling (steel, pop cans, newspaper, etc.) Major appliances (refrigerators, washers and dryers, etc.) Air conditioners. Florescent light bulbs.
Please take your non-electronics recycling to one of the traditional recycling centers in Billings. Refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners can be dropped off at the Billings landfill for a 10 dollar fee, which covers removal of the Freon contained within prior to recycling. Other major appliances can be taken to the traditional recycling centers free of charge or for a small payout depending on current metal prices.
